Metal roof
Lightweight, quickly installed and suitable even for low pitches. A metal roof is ideal for older roof structures that could not support heavy tiles, as well as for modern houses with shed roofs. The correct layering is crucial; otherwise, the roof will be noisy and prone to condensation.
Metal tile or standing seam metal sheeting
- Metal tile (profiled sheet imitating a tile): large panels, fast installation, lower weight, minimum slope around 12 degrees. Visually close to a tile, but the difference is visible up close.
- Standing seam roofing (fixed groove): modern appearance, slope from 3 degrees, suitable for shed and low-pitched roofs, more demanding for the roofer.
- Trapezoidal sheet metalthe cheapest and simplest option, more suitable for garages, sheds and outbuildings than for residential houses.
Advantages
Weight under 7 kg per metre versus 40 kg for tiles, so the existing roof structure usually does not need strengthening. Installation is faster; the sheeting holds in very windy areas and does not crumble from frost. The lifespan of lacquered sheet metal is decades, depending on thickness and lacquer quality.
What to watch out for
Rain noise is dampened by the correct layering: a structured underlayment beneath the sheet metal, insulation and full boarding. Condensation on the underside requires a ventilated gap and an anti-condensation layer. Cut edges are at risk of corrosion, so we cut with shears or a nibbler, never with a grinder. Cheap sheets with thin paint will fade within a few years.
When we recommend sheet metal
Older houses with weaker roof structures, low pitch, shed roofs, extensions, and mountain cottages exposed to snow and wind. When not: in historic buildings and heritage zones where the authority requires tiles, or where you want a quiet roof over a bedroom and do not wish to invest in a full assembly.
What affects the price
Type and thickness of sheet metal, paint quality, roof complexity (every valley and penetration is a roofing detail), composition beneath the sheeting, removal of old covering and condition of the roof structure.

Is a metal roof noisy?
No composite structure included. With full decking, structural matting and insulation, the noise level is comparable to that of tiles. Our quotes always include the complete assembly, not just the sheet metal.
What is the minimum pitch required for sheet metal roofing?
Metal tiles usually require a pitch of 12 degrees, standing seam roofing 3 degrees (with sealed seams), and trapezoidal sheeting from 7 degrees depending on the wave height. Exact values are specified in the manufacturer's instructions for the respective roofing material.
Can sheet metal be laid over old tiles?
No. The old roofing is removed, the roof structure inspected, and the sheeting laid on new battens or sheathing with a foil membrane. Laying over the existing roof leads to condensation and rot.
